Telecoms and Internet Sites

The 3G Portal This site describes itself as 'the community for the 3G industry'. It represents a comprehensive source of information and a good starting point for examining the issues affecting the incipient 3G mobile market

African Cellular This South African site provides an excellent resource for the mobile sector. As its name would suggest it focuses principally upon the African scene, although much of its content is more widely applicable. The 'Mobile Statistics' section is particularly useful. This site was identified by Dypsyl Dlamini, an MBA student at Edinburgh University 1999/2000.

Band-X This company describes itself as 'The Bandwidth Exchange' and its operations are seen by some commentators as an indication of the increasing commoditisation of bandwidth which is now traded like any other basic commodity. The site includes a number of indices which track the price of bandwidth on different international routes

Business.com This site covers business in general with the focus being mainly on the United States. Various industry profiles are provided including telecommunications, wireless, broadband and the Internet. These include a history of the industry in question, together with recent news. Detailed company information provides another useful tool on this comprehensive site.

Cyber Geography Research This site has the purpose of 'Exploring the geographies of the Internet, the Web and other emerging Cyberspaces'. It is a useful site for exploring the origins and evolution of the Internet and the World Wide Web

Global Telecoms Business This is the site version of a very good publication of the same name. Unfortunately there is no historical archive search facility, but a number of full articles are located on the site (you can also search the current issue).

The Internet Society According to this organization its membership represents 'a veritable who's who of the Internet community'. The Society focuses on standards, public policy and training issues relating to the Internet. The site contains a good section on the history of the Internet

The Internet Analyst This site forms part of Multex.com which is focused principally upon investment issues. There does not seem to be a search facility; instead an indexed archive for all of the site's historical output is offered. From early 2000 the site started producing 'The Telecomm Analyst', a weekly review of the industry available on-line and in PDF format.

Mobile and Wireless Computing Part of this site which is maintained by Stanford University covers a list of research projects currently underway in the field of wireless technology. At the time of checking this was the most popular site at the Telecoms Virtual Library

Mobile Shop This site is essentially a 'Buyers' Guide' for mobile phones. In addition, however, it provides a useful summary of the history of the industry and also risks a look into the future. Other useful features include a short section on the networks operating within the UK and a glossary for the mobile industry.

Red Herring This site at times takes quite a tongue in cheek look at technology issues - which can prove quite refreshing. It is also very informative and includes a free archive search facility.

Researcha This site describes itself as "the community for information professionals". It offers free access to a large number of reports relating to telecoms. In order to see these reports it is necessary to register and become a member (free).

The Standard This claims to provide "intelligence for the Internet economy". It is a comprehensive site with free archive searches.

Techweb This umbrella site provides an on-line technology news service for the builders, users and sellers of IT. It forms part of CMP Media which describes itself as the 'IT Network'. The most useful part of this comprehensive site is the full-text search facility which allows you to search back to 1994 for around 30 CMP publications, including Internet Week, Information Week and Data Communications. Links are provided to CMP's other sites, the most relevant of which is Tele.com

Telecommunications on-line The web version of the two Telecommunication publications (US and International). An archive with full text goes back to 1994. There is also a search facility.

Telecom Regulatory Agencies

Telecoms Data.com The company running this site (CIT Publications) commercially produces a number of reports (e.g. Yearbook of European Telecommunications) and the site sets out to promote them. There are, however, a number of enticements to stick around including current news and analysis (both of which have archives). They were also offering a free global telecoms organisation chart on my last visit.

Total Telecom (TT). This site allows you to conduct searches (from January 1997 to the present) of articles from the following publications: Total Telecom, Communications International and Communications Week International (which have their own sites accessible through TT). Registration is required but the service is free. The site also includes an extensive list of links, well organised alphabetically.

UMTS Forum This site concentrates on the issues surrounding 3G mobile telephony. Among its long list of members it counts all four of the existing UK mobile network operators. A number of free reports relating to UMTS are provided

Upside The on-line version of the magazine, it claims to be the 'Tech Insider'. There is a 'Research Center' which enables you to conduct a number of searches.

Wired This site covers new technology with a focus upon computing and the internet. It claims to be "compelling, innovative, courageous and insightful". Telecoms is a background issue but a search facility for the magazine going back to 1993 makes it a worthwhile site for a quick visit.
