Business Newspapers and Magazines
Barron's This is a publication
which you often see referred to in articles on telecoms. Unfortunately, on the
web version there is a limited amount of information which can be obtained
without payment.
The Economist As with a number
of established publications they are not about to start giving away the content
that they have been charging for over the years through the published magazine.
If you register you can access a limited number of articles and are allowed
some free archive material. In general, though, you have to pay.
Forbes Free full text searching of
archive material makes this a very useful site. This US publication follows the
telecoms industry quite closely, not least since many of the names featured in
its annual Fortune 200 (a list of the richest 200 people in the US) are
involved in the industry.
Fortune The web site
contains some useful information on the 'Fortune 500' companies (the elite
companies in the US). It also devotes a large amount of space to the high-tech
sector, including telecoms. To access archive search results, however, you have
to pay per article.
FT.com The Financial Times general site
covers an extensive range of business and financial issues. For some of the
facilities, such as the Global Archive search feature, you need to register
(it's free). Once registered, actual access to articles can involve a fee
although the site often runs free access trials .FT Telecoms
contains a mixture of news and information on the sector.
FT.com Survey
Section This takes you to the FT Surveys (also known as Industry Briefs)
page. Here the most recent surveys are listed and you can follow the link for
FT Telecoms, which is published quarterly. Once the most recent survey is
accessed, there are additional links for previous telecom surveys. Reading
through a whole survey can take hours but it's an efficient way of getting up
to speed on the latest issues affecting the sector. You can look at the monthly
FT Information Technology surveys in the same way. They often contain a lot of
material on the communications industry.
Kiplinger's Personal
Finance Magazine As the title would suggest this site is all about
organising your financial affairs, with particular emphasis upon the stock
market. In the process of reviewing different shares, however, it also provides
some good analysis of the global telecoms market. The archive is searchable
back to 1997 and a search using 'telecoms' throws up a number of interesting
articles.
