BRIE (Berkeley
Roundtable on the International Economy) Based at the University of
California, BRIE is a small, interdisciplinary research project which for
nearly seventeen years has worked with academics, business leaders and scholars
from around the world from such wide-ranging disciplines as urban planning,
political science, economics and engineering to consider the real-world
interactions of technology, markets and economies and to formulate
path-breaking positions that challenge conventional economic policy-making. A
look through their working and research papers (about half available on-line)
reveals a number which relate to telecommunications.
CERP
(Communications Economic Research Program) Based in Perth, Australia, CERP
focuses mainly on the Australian telecoms industry. The site includes a
research section listing the organisation's contributions to books, journals
and conferences, together with an outline of work in progress. A number of
abstracts are available but no full text.
CITI (Columbia Institute for
Tele-Information) This institute focuses upon the issues of management,
strategy and policy in the fields of telecommunications, information technology
and electronic mass media. A large number of working papers are listed by year
and can be ordered for a small fee (free to CITI affiliates). The papers'
contents are not, however, available on the site. Connected with CITI is the
Virtual Institute of Information (VII) which
describes itself as "the source for telecommunications, cybercommunications and
mass media research". It provides an excellent collection of resources relating
to the telecommunications industry, including numerous papers which are freely
accessible.
CRTP (The
Center for Research on Telecommunications Policy) Based at the University
of California, Berkeley, this is a multi-university research and outreach
programme designed to foster business and public policy research on regulatory
and structural issues of regional, national and international importance.
Drawing on the fields of economics, business, and public policy, its research
explores the interactions between business decisions of major
telecommunications firms and regulatory, legislative and antitrust
developments. The site gives access to their working paper series going back to
1994. These can be ordered on the site for a small fee, with a number of the
more recent papers available in PDF format.
PIRP (Program on Information
Resource Policy) Based at Harvard, its mission is "to help policymakers,
our Affiliates, and the public address changes in communications and
information resources". The site lists current research projects, some of which
offer the opportunity for interaction with the work in progress. The
programme's publications are also listed, a few of which are available on-line,
free of charge.
SPRU (Science and
Technology Policy Research) Located at the University of Sussex, England,
its mission is "to deepen understanding of the place of science, technology and
innovation in the global economy for the benefit of government, business and
society". The site carries a publications list, some of which are available
on-line. A search facility is also provided and gave around 150 'hits' when
using telecommunications as the search term.
SSRN (Social Science Research
Network) This site is geared particularly towards economics and provides a
large number of abstracts and on-line articles. Contact details are normally
provided for the relevant authors and an indication is also given of the number
of times individual documents have been accessed. Searching the data-base using
'telecommunications' gives over 50 papers.
